Famous Urdu Poetry Biography

Source(Gogle.com.pk)
Mirza Asadullah Baig Khan (Urdu/Persian: مرزا اسد اللہ بیگ خان ), pen-name Ghalib (Urdu/Persian: غالب, ġhālib means dominant) and (former pen-name) Asad (Urdu/Persian: اسد, asad means lion) (27 December 1797 — 15 February 1869), was a classical Urdu and Persian poet from India during British colonial rule. During his lifetime the Mughals were eclipsed and displaced by the British and finally deposed following the defeat of the Indian rebellion of 1857, events that he wrote of. Most notably, he wrote several ghazals during his life, which have since been interpreted and sung in many different ways by different people. He is considered, in South Asia, to be the one of the most popular and influential poets of the Urdu language. Ghalib today remains popular amongst Urdu speakers not only in India and Pakistan but also amongst diaspora communities around the world. He never worked for a livelihood, lived on either state patronage, credit or the generosity of his friends.
His fame came to him posthumously. He had himself remarked during his lifetime that although his age had ignored his greatness, it would be recognized by later generations.

Poetry Career
Although Ghalib himself was far prouder of his poetic achievements in Persian, he is today more famous for his Urdu ghazals. Numerous elucidations of Ghalib's ghazal compilations have been written by Urdu scholars. The first such elucidation or Sharh was written by Ali Haider Nazm Tabatabai of Hyderabad during the rule of the last Nizam of Hyderabad. Before Ghalib, the ghazal was primarily an expression of anguished love; but Ghalib expressed philosophy, the travails and mysteries of life and wrote ghazals on many other subjects, vastly expanding the scope of the ghazal. This work is considered his paramount contribution to Urdu poetry and literature.

In keeping with the conventions of the classical ghazal, in most of Ghalib's verses, the identity and the gender of the beloved is indeterminate. The critic/poet/writer Shamsur Rahman Faruqui explains that the convention of having the "idea" of a lover or beloved instead of an actual lover/beloved freed the poet-protagonist-lover from the demands of realism. Love poetry in Urdu from the last quarter of the seventeenth century onwards consists mostly of "poems about love" and not "love poems" in the Western sense of the term.

The first complete English translation of Ghalib's ghazals was written by Sarfaraz K. Niazi and published by Rupa & Co in India and Ferozsons in Pakistan. The title of this book is Love Sonnets of Ghalib and it contains complete Roman transliteration, explication and an extensive lexicon.

Mirza Ghalib was a gifted letter writer. Not only Urdu poetry but the prose is also indebted to Mirza Ghalib. His letters gave foundation to easy and popular Urdu. Before Ghalib, letter writing in Urdu was highly ornamental. He made his letters "talk" by using words and sentences as if he were conversing with the reader. According to him "sau kos se ba-zaban-e-qalam baatein kiya karo aur hijr mein visaal ke maze liya karo" [ from hundred of miles talk with the tongue of the pen and enjoy the joy of meeting even when you are separated] His letters were very informal, some times he would just write the name of the person and start the letter. He himself was very humorous and also made his letter very interesting. He said "main koshish karta hoon keh koi aisi baat likhoon jo parhay khoosh ho jaaye" [ I want to write the lines that whoever reads those should enjoy it] When the third wife of one of his friends died, he wrote... Some scholar says that Ghalib would have the same place in Urdu literature if only on the basis of his letters. They have been translated into English by Ralph Russell, The Oxford Ghalib.

Ghalib was a chronicler of this turbulent period. One by one, Ghalib saw the bazaars – Khas Bazaar, Urdu Bazaar, Kharam-ka Bazaar, disappear, whole mohallas (localities) and katras (lanes) vanish. The havelis (mansions) of his friends were razed to the ground. Ghalib wrote that Delhi had become a desert. Water was scarce. Delhi was now “ a military camp”. It was the end of the feudal elite to which Ghalib had belonged. He wrote:

“An ocean of blood churns around me- Alas! Were these all!
The future will show
What more remains for me to see”.

Popular legend has it that he changed his pen name to 'Ghalib' when he came across this sher (couplet) by another poet who used the takhallus (pen name) 'Asad':

The legend says that upon hearing this couplet, Ghalib ruefully exclaimed, "whoever authored this couplet does indeed deserve the Lord's rahmat (mercy) (for having composed such a deplorable specimen of Urdu poetry). If I use the takhallus Asad, then surely (people will mistake this couplet to be mine and) there will be much la'anat (curse) on me!" And, saying so, he changed his takhallus to 'Ghalib'.

However, this legend is little more than a figment of the legend-creator's imagination.takhallus 'Asad' appears more infrequently in Ghalib's work than 'Ghalib', it appears that he did use both his noms de plume interchangeably throughout his career and did not seem to prefer either one over the other.

Personal Life

Mirza was born in Kala Mahal in Agra. In the end of 18th century, his birthplace was converted into Indrabhan Girls' Inter College. The birth room of Mirza Ghalib is preserved within in the school. Around 1810, he was married to Umrao Begum, daughter of Nawab Ilahi Bakhsh Khan of Loharu (younger brother of the first Nawab of Loharu, Nawab Mirza Ahmad Baksh Khan , at the age of thirteen. He had seven children, none of whom survived (this pain has found its echo in some of Ghalib's ghazals). There are conflicting reports regarding his relationship with his wife. She was considered to be pious, conservative and God-fearing.

Ghalib was proud of his reputation as a rake. He was once imprisoned for gambling and subsequently relished the affair with pride. Once, when someone praised the poetry of the pious Sheikh Sahbai in his presence, Ghalib immediately retorted, "How can Sahbai be a poet? He has never tasted wine, nor has he ever gambled; he has not been beaten with slippers by lovers, nor has he ever seen the inside of a jail." In the Mughal court circles, he even acquired a reputation as a "ladies' man".

He died in Delhi on February 15, 1869. The house where he lived in Gali Qasim Jaan, Ballimaran, Chandni Chowk, in Old Delhi has now been turned into 'Ghalib Memorial' and houses a permanent Ghalib exhibition.

Love Poets Biography

How my poetry started

I am an 18-year-old male who lives in a suburb of Minneapolis, Minnesota.  I started writing poetry in spring of 1997 but there were only a few poems intermixed in some love letters I wrote to a girl I had a crush on.  I stopped writing for many months but then got started in again on it in early 1998.  I was in English class and was asked to write a conceit; for that assignment I wrote Your Love, Your Cup of Hot Chocolate.  I received some positive feedback and after that I started writing more often.  I carry a little notebook around with me in which I write all my poems.  I find it a soothing activity for my soul and have been known to write at almost anytime of the day or night.

In May of 1998 I showed the book to a couple of my closest friends and they thought that the poetry was good so I thought I would post it on a web site and see what the rest of the world thought.  WOW.  The response has been very overwhelming for me; I receive about 30 emails per day from visitors to my site and many have written me telling me that my poetry touched them, restored their faith in the male heart, patched a relationship, told a love how much they cared, brought tears to their eyes or just a feeling that they were not alone.  I feel really good knowing that my poetry has made an impact on someone's life.

More about me

As I said before, I'm 18 and live in a suburb of Minneapolis, Minnesota.  I work for a local IT firm designing web sites for the State of Minnesota and many large and small companies.  I even have my own office!  I work full-time and attend college classes on a part time basis.  I have been politically active, sitting on a state commission for my political party and have worked on numerous political campaigns.

The women in my poems

The thoughts and emotions that show through my poetry are mostly from real life experiences, however, I typically will elaborate on those experiences and emotions so that I get more powerful poems.  The reality of my life isn't quite as nice as the one I write about sometimes.  I have had several loves in my life during the past few years and have had a broken heart each time.  I also have had several women I've wanted but could not have for one reason or another.  Loss of love and sadness are apparent in many of my poems since the depressing parts of love seem to last longer than the happy parts.  I'm sure you can relate.  I also find that most of my poetry is written when I am depressed, which I hear is typical among many poets.   Every couple months a new woman comes into my life and I get a little excited but then it quickly subsides and I move on to the next.  My actual luck with relationships is pretty bad.  I have just recently met this new woman who utterly fascinates me in every way.  I want to get to know her more but at the same time I worry about becoming entangled in another relationship.  I've been hurt so many times that I wonder if next time I will not only lose my love but my sanity as well.

I have a lot of very close female friends and they play a big role in keeping me together.  Without them I would be lost and I don't think they know how important their friendship has been in my life.  They are the ones that are there to pick up what's left of me after a bad breakup.  There's something about a woman that makes me putty in their hands, I'm not sure I could point out any one feature but rather I believe it is the whole package that just gets to me.  At my age I am not looking for someone to spend the rest of my life with but rather just someone to share my present thoughts, feelings and emotions with; a companion in life as opposed to a companion for life.Sara Teasdale received public admiration for her well-crafted lyrical poetry which centered on a woman's changing perspectives on beauty, love, and death. Many of Teasdale's poems chart developments in her own life, from her experiences as a sheltered young woman in St. Louis, to those as a successful yet increasingly uneasy writer in New York City, to a depressed and disillusioned person who would commit suicide in 1933. Although many later critics would not consider Teasdale a major poet, she was popular in her lifetime with both the public and critics. She won the first Columbia Poetry Prize in 1918, a prize that would later be renamed the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry.

Critics found much of Teasdale's poetry to be unsophisticated but full of musical language and evocative emotion. A New York Times Book Review contributor, writing about the 1917 edition of Love Songs, asserted that "Miss Teasdale is first, last, and always a singer." Reviewing the 1915 volume Rivers to the Sea, another New York Times Book Review contributor deemed the book "a little volume of joyous and unstudied song."

Teasdale's work in the 1926 book Dark of the Moon demonstrates her sensitivity to language, according to New York Times Book Review contributor Percy A. Hutchison. Hutchison praised "the exquisite refinement of Sara Teasdale's lyric poetry," which "shows how near Sara Teasdale can come to art's ultimate goals." Marguerite Wilkinson, writing in the New York Times Book Review and Magazine, commented on Teasdale's poetic development in 1920's Flame and Shadow, noting that "Sara Teasdale has found a philosophy of life and death," having "grown intellectually since the publication of her earlier books" and displaying a "growth in artistry." Wilkinson concluded that Flame and Shadow "is a book to read with reverence of joy."

Saturday Review of Literature contributor Louis Untermeyer, reviewing Strange Victory shortly after the poet's death, also commented on Teasdale's development. Untermeyer insisted that Strange Victory "must be ranked among her significant works," that its "beauty is in the restraint" of its "ever-present though never elaborated theme." Reviewing the 1984 collection Mirror of the Heart: Poems of Sara Teasdale, Choice contributor J. Overmyer voiced similar opinions of Teasdale's poetry, as its "simply stated thoughts are complex . . . and reverberate in the mind."

Georgian poet. Born at Rugby. Educated at Rugby School and King's College, Cambridge. He was an atheist and active Socialist.

He was a friend of Edward Marsh and worked with him to prepare and promote the first Georgian Anthology of poetry.

After travelling in Germany, and, following his nervous breakdown he went on a long tour to recuperate, taking in the USA, Canada, Honolulu, Samoa, Fiji, New Zealand, and Tahiti.

After hesitation about what course of action to take at the start of the First World War he joined the navy. He was a witness at the siege of Antwerp before writing his famous set of five sonnets called 1914. Though he had seen the devastation and suffering created by the war he kept it all at an emotional distance from himself, denying the realities of war.

He had a deeply confused personality - given to both ecstatic enthusiasm and suicidal doubt.

Following a mosquito bite he died of acute blood poisoning on board ship on his way to Gallipoli, and was buried on the Greek Island of Skyros.

Minds at War and Out in the Dark contain all five of Brooke's 1914 war sonnets, plus his sombre and realistic last poem, Soon to Die.

Minds at War contains a further thirteen and a half pages of discussion of Brooke's ideas, and extracts from his letters which reveal something of the way his mind worked, and the origins of some of the ideas in his sonnets.

There are five pages of information about Brooke, and extracts from his letters in Out in the Dark.

ELEANOR FARJEON, 1881-1965.

Born in London. Well known as an author of children's stories.

She was a close personal friend of Helen and Edward Thomas in the last few years of his life. She loved Edward, but knew that expressing her feelings to him would mean the immediate end of their friendship. They often visited each other and went on long country walks together. She typed his poems for him and submitted them, on his behalf, under the pseudonym of Edward Eastaway, to various publications.

Helen was aware of Eleanor's feelings towards Edward and was perfectly content with the situation, believing that it might help to make Edward a little happier.

There are two of her poems in Minds at War and one in Out in the Dark. The poem that is common to both books is "Now that you, too" which is a moving poem about saying goodbye to Edward Thomas for the last time.

JULIAN GRENFELL, 1888-1915.

Educated at Eton, and Balliol College, Oxford. He joined the army in 1910. He seemed to take a psychopathic joy in killing people. His poem Into Battle is said to be the most anthologised poem of the First World War.

He died of wounds on 30th April, 1915, a few days after sending his poem to The Times.

Into Battle appears in both Minds at War and Out in the Dark.

IVOR GURNEY, 1890-1937.

Born in Gloucester. Educated at King's School Gloucester and the Royal College of Music. He wrote poetry and music from before the war.

He volunteered to fight and was initially turned down because of his poor eyesight. He was gassed and wounded and returned to Britain.

Mental illness developed. He was diagnosed as a paranoid schizophrenic in 1922. He was committed to mental hospital where he continued to write poetry and compose - sometimes believing that he was still taking part in the war. He died of tuberculosis.

Three of his poems appear in Minds at War and two in Out in the Dark.

RUDYARD KIPLING, 1865-1936.

Born in Bombay. As a small child he was sent to England (Southsea) to be educated. He was desperately miserable for some years. He was principally educated at the United Services College, Westward Ho!

Before the war he favoured re-armament. He was vigorous in his opposition to Germany. After his only son was killed in the Battle of the Loos,in September 1915, Kipling's confident and simple verse faltered briefly.

He is best known for his classic children's books - especially the Jungle Books (1894, 1895). He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1907.

During the First World War he was Director of Propaganda to the British Colonies.

In Minds at War there are six of his war poems, plus an extract from A Song of the English. In Out in the Dark there are four full poems and two extracts.
